Conference Theme Description:

"Breaking It Down, Jazzing It Up"

Jazz, as a music form, has always been a little unorthodox and impolite. It’s like a painting that you can’t quite make out if you stand too close to it, but back up a few steps, and it all comes together in its themes, colors, and motifs. The theme of the 2010 workshop is borrowing from its host city’s reputation as a place where jazz music is beloved. Jazz music was, ultimately, the product of the New Orleans' melting pot. At the turn of the century, the streets of New Orleans ‘were awash in blues music, ragtime and the native brass-band fanfares’ where performers shared a passion for syncopation and for improvisation. For us, jazz as a metaphor fits because, like SI, it’s innovators had to have a vision. When we put all of our voices together, it may sound like a cacophony to some but back up a little and it all comes together. Supplemental Instruction, like Jazz is messy to the untrained senses but it’s all about getting everyone to play at once, to put their voice in the room, to contribute and participate. SI participants, SI leaders, faculty, and support staff . . . each of us doing our best to break it down for each other . . . because breaking it down is our way of jazzing it up.

SI Update: Moving to the Web

Today, I would like to announce that we are changing our SI Update Newsletter format from a PDF newsletter to a web blog format. We believe that this will allow our readers to stay up to date with news from the International and National Centers for SI, provide opportunities for readers to comment on posts, and to increase the number of posts so readers have more current news items to read. We plan to provide monthly articles from a variety of sources including the International Center staff as well as other contributors from around the world.

Benefits from the change in format include:
• More frequentl updates
• Easily searchable items
• Archive of past posts
• Posts can be tagged or labelled for organization
• Readers can use RSS feed to stay up to date
• Readers can leave comments to continue the discussion

The New SI Update format will not replace our current SI Net email discussion group. We hope that we are now offering another opportunity to inform our SI colleges and provide another resource to continue the discussion on student success and retention.
